Lee Daniels, director of Precious, is currently in Cannes promoting the thriller The Paperboy, but he’s already planning his next film, an adaptation of a Washington Post article on a long-serving black White House butler who lived to see the election of Barack Obama. Early reports indicate that the butler, Eugene Allen, is to be played by Forest Whitaker and his wife by Oprah Winfrey, who likely needs a distraction from her OWN cable network. Matthew McConaughey, in Mr. Daniels’s Paperboy, is to play John F. Kennedy, somehow (but his accent is pure LBJ!); John Cusack is to become the latest actor to assay the part of Richard Nixon; Alan Rickman and Jane Fonda are playing the Reagans; Nicole Kidman is playing an unnamed role that we’d wager a President’s salary will be Jackie Kennedy.

It’s all very strange (a Brit playing the iconic Reagan? Jane Fonda playing a demure conservative?) but Lee Daniels has a knack for making peculiar casting work–his directing won Mo’Nique an Oscar and Mariah Carey newfound respect, and John Cusack as Nixon has a peculiar sweaty genius to it. He’ll be the one who wins an Oscar for this, right?

Alan Rickman is known for playing bad guys (“Die Hard”) and sort-of-bad guys (the “Harry Potter” series), but now the British actor is playing one of music history’s coolest guys.

Rickman will head to the ’70s to play Hilly Kristal, the founder of New York’s legendary CBGB in an as-yet-untitled film about the club. Written by Randall Miller and Jody Savin (“Bottle Shock”), the project has the OK from Kristal’s daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, who will act as the film’s co-producer. Miller will direct, with the film expected to start shooting as early as June, according to Billboard..

Founded in 1973 as a haven for fans of country, bluegrass and blues (hence the CBGB), the famed NYC venue eventually changed formats to house rock bands and helped launch the careers of such punk-era legends as The Ramones, Blondie, Patti Smith and Television. It closed its doors in 2006.

Rickman, last seen in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,” will soon appear in the heist comedy “Gambit,” opposite Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth.

Alan Rickman has said that the end of the Harry Potter films is “a cause for celebration”.

The 65-year-old, who plays Severus Snape in the movies, insisted that JK Rowling’s story reached a satisfying conclusion and that the end of the series is not a bad thing.

“The point about a great story is that it’s got a beginning, a middle and end,” he told the Los Angeles Times.

“The ending of this story was quite popular and beautifully judged by Jo Rowling and [director] David Yates, so it’s not a cause for sadness; it’s a cause for celebration that it was rounded off so well.”

Rickman went on to say that the films played a large part in his life for years.

“It was a punctuation mark in my life every year because I would be doing other things but always come back to that and I was always aware of my place in the story even as others around me were not,” he said.

Rickman is currently starring on Broadway in the musical comedy Seminar.

In May, the actor praised Rowling in a letter he penned shortly after finishing his work on the Harry Potter films
